blumenthal and i asked the f.d.a. commissioner to meet with us to personally meet with us after thanksgiving to discuss the steps the f.d.a. is taking to ensure the safety of energy drinks. every other week we're seeing mounting evidence that energy drinks pose safety risks. you learn about young people hospitalized or seriously hurt after consuming what are marketed as little energy pick pick-me-ups. we look forward to working with commissioner hamburg to protect our children and to protect everyone in america from these die tear supplements, whether it is 5-hour energy or the monster energy drink which led to the death of this 14-year-old girl in maryland. mr. president, it's been many years since came to this floor and argued about dietary supplements. we all know what's involved here. i always preface my remarks by saying when i got up this morning i took my vitamin, i took my fish oil pill. i believe i should have the right to do that. i don't know p it helps, but i think it does. but when it comes to dietary supplements that go beyond that type of supplement, the things that include dr
, but i think we have to look at the record. >> did someone tell you to filibuster us? >> i apologize but it's an important issue and i care about a. >> you did not have the authority to stop this. that is what you keep saying today that you don't have the authority to do it. do you think dr. smith's agency should have stopped its? if you don't doubt, just say you don't know. >> i think that clearly massachusetts is working very hard. >> do you think they could have stopped at? >> they were unsuccessful and you know it was tragic. we worked hard with them to limit -- >> okay, okay. i have two more questions for you then. is your position today that the necc was not a manufacturing pharmacy and that you had no jurisdiction over its business activities quit is that your position today? yes or no? >> necc is registered as a compounding pharmacy. >> in your opinion, your opinion, this is at the request of the hearing now, is it your position as necc was not a manufacturing pharmacy and you had no jurisdiction over its activities? yes or no? >> that is in subject of an ongoing investigatio
house correspondent chuck todd. thanks for joining us tonight. this was a hot pressure cooker press conference and you were in the middle. let's talk about the president's tactic. it looks like he's got one. here he is sticking out his message of defending the middle class today, sticking to it. he practically dared the republicans to hold tax cuts for the middle class hostage. he went back to that word hostage. let's take a look. >> the other option is to pass a law right now that would prevent any tax hike whatsoever on the first $250,000 of everybody's income. i hope republicans in the house come on board, too. we should not hold the middle class hostage while we debate tax cuts for the wealthy. the most important step we can take right now, i think the foundation for a deal that helps the economy, creates jobs, gives consumersty, which means gives consumers confidence they'll have consumers during the holiday season if we right away say 98% of americans aren't going to see their taxes go up. >> i thought that was pretty well crafted as a tactic. i don't know if it's a strategy.
